Football in the morning: Sept. 18

This was the time to hang back, let them walk ahead.

So Mix and I dawdled a bit, letting his daughter have a few minutes with her boyfriend after his football game. She rejoined us after he went to the locker room.

She’s a great kid, and while I’ve only met him once, when we all got together on my birthday, from what I understand his approval ratings are very high.

I had originally texted Mix because our alma mater was going to be playing about an hour-and-a-half away. They used to come to Massachusetts about every year, so we went to a few games, but it doesn’t seem to happen much anymore.

He never saw it, but when I checked to make sure that his lack of response wasn’t because of something wrong — or that I had done something, because … paranoid — he mentioned that they’d be about 10 minutes from my house for a JV game the next morning.

Well, that sounded like a plan. Junior varsity football games aren’t usually what I do for fun, but it was a good chance to hang out, and it’s always fun. It had actually been since my birthday back in May, which is way too long.

There’s a big varsity game in a couple weeks where he lives, maybe Thanksgiving morning if we’re free. I told him I’d let him know. Hopefully it’ll work out.

It turns out we weren’t the only former college roomies to go to a football game together.

What I wrote

I know malls aren’t what they used to be, but it just doesn’t seem right when one doesn’t have a pizza place.

I don’t want to think. I just want to get home.

Parental wisdom that was good, just incomplete.

At the end of a long day, we revisited Switzerland.

My given name is William. I go by Bill. I didn’t think it was all that complicated.

Do the weekly self-care tips mean that someone … or something … is worried about me?

Stuff I read

Happy fifth to Savannah and Chad!

It took Graham a couple weeks to get back into the swing of teaching, but he pulled it off.

Becky talks to her boyfriend Josh about his trip to Europe.

Renata is having some more problems with her teeth.

Pea Green doesn’t think it’s a good idea to be friends with your children’s teachers on social media. I don’t have kids, but if I did, I’d probably agree.

Aaron leaving his job meant he had an exit interview. I don’t think I’ve ever had one, and I imagine it would be awkward.

Christina broke the rules, but it seems like she had fun.

Austin ponders the uses of a time machine.

It may not have been Alexis’ grandmother’s pizza, but it was close enough.

Jackie in Italy was where she was supposed to be all along.

When you turn it on, it can be very hard to turn it off.

I’m not sure how they’ll go on

Stow is the next town over from where I live. This is a civic disaster, and quite possibly against Massachusetts law.

Tweets I liked

I hate standing in line, and if there’s anyone in this world who I’d stand in line for 24 or 48 hours or whatever it is to see their casket, I’ll probably be in the front of the funeral home, anyways.

I am also aware that the death of Queen Elizabeth II has raised some differing thoughts and a desire for reckoning. I don’t think it’s my place to judge those feelings or the people who would stand in a queue for days.

All that being said, this is a journey.

Same here, and I’m 50.

Probably by someone blasting Coldplay.

I like dogs perfectly fine … preferably small, and always someone else’s.

In that same spirit, I’m boycotting Doritos until the serving size is “half a bag.” (Actually, my tendency to eat them in large amounts is the reason I rarely have them in the house.)

Any chance we can make this a law, that you can have an ice cream truck for your birthday?

      1. Things just generally tend to get worse as time goes on, that’s all. Or maybe that’s just my teeth, and mine aren’t NEARLY as bad as yours. (I also went many years between dentist visits, which probably didn’t help.)

      2. Lol thank…you…? 🤣 we’ll have to see. Genetically, the odds are mixed. Lots of bad teeth in my family, but once my dad got his dental situation under control, he hasn’t needed more work done since. Cross your fingers for me! 🤞🏼

  1. Thanks for the mention, Bill!

I’ve had several jobs that have given me exit interviews when I’ve left. And I find it interesting that the companies that I actually have something constructive to say as I go are the ones that don’t give the exit interviews while the ones I’m leaving on good terms with are the ones who do offer the exit.
