I have good news and bad news about Christmas.

The good news is that I will probably reinstate my ban-that-no-one-follows on starting Christmas before Thanksgiving, or even Halloween.

Soccer in the rain

The result was pretty much a foregone conclusion, but for those interested in the details — the U.S. women’s soccer team beat Mexico 4-0.

Sisters Kristie and Samantha Mewis — the pride of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School in Massachusetts — opened the scoring, with Kristie setting up Samantha.

Christen Press scored two goals, and Tobin Heath connected on a rocket shortly after coming into the game, scoring right below where we were standing.

Meeting my neighbors because of a cat

There’s a lot of activity right outside our house.

There are the morning walkers, dogs galore and a group of kids who walk and bike and ride scooters together. I’m guessing they’re told not to leave the neighborhood, but they’re basically left to their own devices.

And on pleasant evenings, the number of people strolling on our street is a veritable passeggiata.
