I hate nicknames, or at least when people try to give me nicknames, since for the most part, I’ve never really liked any of them.
However, a few people over the years have coined names for me that only they are allowed to use, and in that spirit, how can I object that Pea Green from Smelly Socks and Garden Peas has dubbed me “Lovely Bill”?
Just don’t you try and call me that.
Pea Green has nominated me for the Golden Bloggerz Award, created by Chris from Golden Bloggerz made to motivate and reward all these amazing bloggers that work daily to serve their audience and they worth more recognition. Their priority is to do their best to help their readers solve their problems and reach their goals.
Thanks for thinking of me!
Rules
- Place the award logo on your blog.
- Mention the rules.
- Thank whom ever nominated you and place a link to their website.
- Mention the awards creator and add a link to that, too.
- Tell your audience three things about you.

- Nominate 10 to 20 people who deserve this award.

- Ask you nominees any five questions that you want.
- Share two to three links to your best posts.
And with that, here we go … .
Three things you may not know about me
1. Knock on wood, but I have never broken a bone in my life. I popped my fingers out of joint a few times and my knees often make funny noises, but that’s it.
2. I fail to see the appeal in scaring myself on purpose, which is why I don’t ride roller coasters or watch horror movies, among other things.
3. My first date with Suzi was pretty conventional; we went to dinner. For our second date, she asked if she could come to my college’s Reunion Weekend. When that happens, you know it’s something … .
Pea Green’s questions
1. Sunrise or sunset and why?
Sunrise comes way too early (even if I’m awake for it), and sunset means that the fun thing I’m doing outside is probably almost over. But I’m going to go with sunset because sunset at the beach is pretty cool. (The photo at the top of this post is sunset in Santa Monica.)
2. What book has had a lasting effect on you and your life?
”A Season on the Brink” by John Feinstein. I had never read an inside-access, “fly on the wall” type of book like that before, and I was hooked.
3. Why do you keep blogging? What’s its value for you?
Expression, a hobby, keeping my brain engaged, the sense of validation when other people like my stuff (That’s not the main reason, but I won’t lie, and you’d better not, either!) … and I’m always chasing it. I’m always striving to write the post stops me in my tracks, stops readers in their tracks to say “Wow, this is good.”
I’ll probably never do it, but if I do, then I’ll just have to do it again.
4. What cruel and unusual punishment would you like to extract on the evilest of evil people?
It’s not particularly cruel, but it is unusual … I just want to see bad things happen to them, because bad things happening to bad people doesn’t happen nearly enough.
5. What’s your last thought as you go to sleep at night?
I don’t know if there’s anything specific. I’m just trying to get comfortable.

My questions
1. What is your favorite quotation, and why?
2. Your house is burning down. You, your loved ones and your pets will all get out safely, but you can only take one thing with you. What is it?
3. What is something (or someone) you hate, even though you know it’s completely irrational?
4. In 25 words or less, what is your process for writing blog posts?
5. What is the last thing you regretted doing?
Some of my favorite posts
I read a piece from Jill Filipovic that made me ponder the concept of who we are, who we aren’t and who we can be (which is also the title of the post).
If travel is like “a monastery in time,” what can we take out of it to make it something more? (This is my half of a collaboration I did with my pal Renata of Buffalo Sauce Everywhere, who would have been on my list if she weren’t on Pea Green’s. It is also my most-read post so far this year.)
“If you met you, would you like you?” It was a harder question than I thought it would be.
This was so enjoyable to read! I’m hoping I can push depression brain out of my head long enough to respond to Pea Green’s questions for myself. Also every time Pea Green calls you “lovely Bill” it makes me smile 🙂

Thank you for the nomination! I’m with you on number two, I went on one of those drop you from the sky carnival rides three years ago and it was enough fear and thrill for the rest of my life. I also can’t stand scary movies!

Thanks for the nomination! 🙂 I’ve never broken a bone either. The worst I’ve done was sprain my ankle during my senior year of college.

I loved this — and I’m with you on horror movies. And, thank you for the nomination. I’m sort of in a lull right now, working on another writing project and in a bit of a block, but it was so nice of you to think of me.
But, I’ll answer one of your questions here because these are blog rules I try to live by: In 25 words or less, what is your process for writing blog posts?
Write every day, but don’t post everything you write. Read more than you write. Edit and proof — twice. It’s ok to take a break.
Thank you again, Bill … your nomination made my day. 🙂

A story I didn’t tell … we visited a class with one of my old professors, who said, “Is that your lovely wife?” Suzi either said or told me later that she thought (I don’t remember which) “No … not yet.”
