Music in the key of friends

A friend hit me with a Twitter challenge to find a song my friends say describes me.

And, in a rare occurrence, I had no idea what to say.

For the record, she chose “What I Am” by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians as hers.

I didn’t put it to my friends — I’m sure one of them would have found a Dave Matthews Band song both because she meant it and as a way of lovingly trolling me because she knows I’m not a fan — but I certainly hope this wouldn’t have been their first thought (even though I know it’s Denis Leary sending himself up.)

But how do you decide what song fits you the best, especially without seeming egocentric?

Coming up with one for my wife was much easier, since Martina McBride’s “There You Are” was the first dance at our wedding.

I never did find an answer, but scrolling through my music, I found two that I hope people would say about me.

Have I ever told you how much it meant
For all your kindness,
I am blessed and I thought that you should know
How much you’ve helped me grow.

I wanna thank you.
I wanna tell you this,
That you’ve made me the happiest.
Thank you.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

Yeah, if I can live the kind of life that would make people say that about me, that would be just fine.
